The supplements mentioned here will keep the HPA axis balanced, reduce elevated cortisol levels and enhance your health. Live life to its fullest!!!
Vitamin C has been shown to alter high levels of cortisol. A 2001 study examined the effects of vitamin C on high cortisol levels created by physical stress on marathon runners. In a randomized, placebo-controllled study, the ultramarathon runners were given 500mg a day of vitamin C, 1500mg a day of vitamin C or a placebo seven days before the marathon, the day of the race and two days after the race. Research showed that atheletes who took 1500mg per day of vitamin C had significantly lower post-race cortisol levels than those taking 500mg a day or the placebo.
In another study in the journal of Psychopharmacology, another randomzied double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed how taking 3000mg a day of vitamin C reduced cortisol created by psychologial stress. Stress factors were a mock job interview and an arithmetic test. The recommended dosage was 1000-3000mg per day.
Another study published in 2003 looked at a battery of mental stress tests. The study showed that taking fish oil supplementation drastically slows down adrenal activation created by mental stress through its effects at the level of the central nervous system.
There are numerous studies available that give evidence to taking marine omega-3s that help alleviate a range of psychological disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, memory loss and learning difficulties. This is truly brain food. In the studies that I have seen, the optimal ranges have been from 1000-2500mg on average.
Phosphatidylserine has also been shown to reduce cortisol levels caused by physical stress. The healthy range in the studies that I read were 300-800mg per day.
DHEA is a very important hormone that decreases after a certain age each year. Numerous studies say that hormone production begins to decline around the tender age of 27. Keep in mind that our cortisol levels are on the increase and many of us do not love ourselves enough to do what is necessary to live a vibrant life. Healthy ranges of this supplement are 25-50mg per day.
Now for the herbs that help combat stress and its effects. Rhodiolia rosea used for centuries in traditional Asian and
European medicines. Recommended dosage per Dr. Perricone is one 250mg extra capsule, standardized to 3% rosavins and 1% salidrosides.
Ginseng and Ginkgo biloba are also superstars in fighting stress. The most widely used forms are Panax ginseng, also known as Korean, Chinese or Asian ginseng. For ginkgo, studies show that taking 120mg per day of standardized ginkgo extract saw smaller increases in the level of cortisol.
One of the most powerful stress-fighters is exercise. We were designed to be in motion. Everything in the universe is in motion or vibrating. Today, we have developed into couch sitting television watchers, which actually helps to create stress. Too many commercials or advertising of material items that you can not get or just watching the news can really be stressful.
If not overdone and done with supplementation, exercise can enhance our immune system, boosts circulatioin and help us get a good night's sleep. Sleeping is extremely important because this is when cellular repair occurs. So in essence, we truly have the power to combat physical and mental stress. We have the supplements, the herbs, the green power, meditation, breathing exercise and physcial exercises.
At this point, it is up to you to display to your daughter, son, husband, father, mother, uncle, aunt or niece, the actions that show you care beyond just our ego attached selves. This is the things we do versus our innate essence.
