Hello, during the next few days, we will show you how stress affects us and various methods available to lessen its effects. From obesity to depression to gum diease, with new research, we now know that stress has a major negative impact on our lives, if we choose not to act.
Let us undertand how the mind directly affects our body. The organs that produce hormones are called endocrine glands. In Greek, hormone means "to set in motion". Hormones are made by endocrine glands to control or set in motion another part of our body.
Our endocrine system and nervous system work hand in hand. They are so intertwined that they are referred to as a single neuroendocrine system and performs the following:
*maintain our body's internal state or homeostasis
*reacts to stimuli outside of our body
*regulates growth, development and reproduction
*produces, uses and stores energy
This neuroendocrine system helps ensure each of us safety from external and internal threats and the hormones mainly responsible for this are called the "stress hormones".
Insulin and cortisol are known as the death hormones. Now keep in mind that both of these hormones are necessary for good health, yet when they are elevated, cause serious havoc on our system such as diabetes and obesity. We need stress hormones for fight or flight situations such as to get out of dodge from a moving car or animal that is attempting to attack us, yet we must be mindful of elevated levels.
We have spoke of perception and how this plays a role in our lives as well. Please read How To Reduce Stress. The latter link also touches on the physical ramifications of negative emotions, which are alarming and far reaching.
Now, none of us are immune to stress nor its effects. With Cell Phone Dangers,
email, tv, ipods and other techno gadgets, we almost never have a minute's peace to unwind and lower our stress levels.
At certain elevated levels, insulin and cortisol are inflammatory agents. Too many of us suffer from these excesses in part due to consuming too many sugars and other carbohydrates in our diets. The second is from too much caffeine and stress. Giving up the sugars and starchy foods keeps our insulin levels normal. Of course this is totally up to us. It directly displays The Actions That Show We Care.
A study at Duke University found the effects of morning coffee exaggerating the body's stress response and increasing the stress hormone levels all day long and into the evening. Why not drink something like a chlorophyll based powder that will give you a boost of energy, help to cleanse your body and without the adverse side effects?
Even the Wall Street Journal has shown that women who experience high levels of stress or anxiety during pregnancy increase their risk for delivering prematurely or delivering infants with low birth weights, respiratory and developmental complications.
In addition, maternal stress during pregnancy is known to some scientist to affect the formation of the important hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA is a major part of the neuroendocrine system, controlling the reactions to stress and playing an important role in the regulation of body processes, including digestion, immunity and energy use.
Please give this serious consideration. In the next article, we will cover How We Get Old Before Our Time. Following that will be solutions to combat stress.
